Wines from the Latest Wine Casino — and How to Guess Them All

ree

For the debut of Wine Casino in Munich, I prepared a truly exciting set: two classic, textbook-style whites and two reds with a twist. Each bottle was a riddle — and a lesson in tasting, intuition, and trusting your senses.

If you joined, you already know how thrilling it was to guess the grapes and origins just by flavour and aroma. And if you didn’t — here’s your chance to discover the wines we played with (and maybe even get a head start before the next tasting game).

🍋Granbazán Albariño “Etiqueta Verde” 2024 — Galicia, Spain

Albariño is the star of Spain’s Rías Baíxas region — and this bottle from Granbazán is a brilliant example of why this grape is so loved worldwide.

It smells bright and fresh: citrus, honeydew melon, lemon verbena, fennel, and chamomile. On the palate, it’s light, zesty, and minerally with a refreshing acidity (7.9 g/l!). And if you notice a gentle hint of saltiness, that’s your clue — this wine grows just a few kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. .

🌊 Tasting tip: if your wine tastes salty, it’s often born near the sea.

🥂 Perfect with: seafood, goat cheese, or light salads.

👉 Order Granbazán Albariño here and pay attention to other Albariño wines from the same producer here. This might be your next exciting tasting.

🌸 Erste + Neue Gewürztraminer 2022 — Alto Adige, Italy

Gewürztraminer is the perfume of the wine world — one swirl, and you’re walking through a field of flowers in June. This one, from Erste + Neue in Alto Adige, shows just how aromatic and full-bodied this grape can be.

It bursts with rose petals, lychee, clove, cinnamon, and sage. After 10 months on fine lees in stainless steel, it gained a creamy texture and deep aromas — no wonder everyone guessed the grape variety right at the tasting!

🍯 With 15% alcohol, it’s bold but beautifully balanced by freshness and spice.

🥘 Try it with: pumpkin curry, Thai cuisine, or creamy cheeses — a perfect match for cozy autumn evenings.

🍒 Château du Moulin-à-Vent 2022 — Beaujolais, France

This one surprised even me! When most people think of Beaujolais, they imagine light, juicy wines that smell like bonbons and summer berries. But this Château du Moulin-à-Vent 2022 proves that Beaujolais can also be elegant, structured, and complex.

Made from 60-year-old Gamay vines grown in granite-rich soils, it shows aromas of black cherry, plum, violet, and spice. A part of the wine was aged in oak barrels, making it velvety and powerful, with fine tannins and a long finish. This wine is a real star:

🏅 93 points – Wine Enthusiast 🏅 91 points – Decanter

🍽️ Pairs with: roasted duck, mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses.

🎯 Tasting twist: the wine tricked many participants — a lot bet on Garnacha. A great guess, but Beaujolais took the win this time!

🍇 “Viñas” Elias Mora Tinto Semicrianza 2022 — Toro, Spain

If you’ve ever tried Tempranillo from Rioja, meet its cousin: Tinta de Toro. This grape thrives in the hot, dry climate of the Toro wine region, giving wines more intensity and warmth — and Elias Mora does it brilliantly.

Expect blackcurrant, black olive, clove, and sweet licorice, with just six months in American oak adding a touch of vanilla and spice.

It’s a fruit-driven, lightly oaked red, easy to enjoy yet full of personality — my “twist wine” for the evening.

🥘 Pairs with: semi-hard cheeses, charcuterie, pasta with tomato sauce, or hearty stews.

👉 Order Elias Mora Tinto “Viñas” here. This wine is a great Price & Quality find.
