Wine Casino: How Not Only to Savour, but Also to Win

Wine tastings are great — but what if they could be even more fun, interactive, and just a little bit competitive?

That’s exactly what Wine Casino is all about — a new tasting format that I was so enthusiastic to bring to Munich. So far, I’m the only sommelier hosting it here, and for a good reason: it completely changes the way people experience wine.

🎲 What Is a Wine Casino?

Forget the traditional setup where you quietly sit, get your wine poured, and listen to someone talk about residual sugar levels and grape varieties.

Wine Casino turns wine tasting into a playful, immersive experience — a mix of sensory exploration, friendly competition, and laughter. It’s not about memorizing facts; it’s about learning to trust your senses, discovering your preferences, and having a really good time while doing it.

🔮 How It Works

We begin with a quick walkthrough of the Wine Casino field. Everyone gets a game card filled with hints and terms like acidity, body, dryness, and tannins. We taste, discuss what each of these sensations feels like, and connect them to familiar flavors and textures. That’s how we learn to taste like professionals — but in a much more relaxed way.

And then, the best part begins: I hand out chips. Because, yes, it’s a game!

🍷 Blind Tasting Begins

Once the game starts, I pour the wine — but without showing you the bottle. This is my favorite part! When labels and expectations disappear, you rely only on your senses and intuition. In blind tasting, your palate becomes the true guide.

🎰 Time to Bet!

Here comes the Casino spirit. You place your bets on what you believe about the wine:

Grape variety or the aroma family (fruity, floral, herbal, spicy...)
Country
Vintage
Alcohol level
Type of ageing vessel (oak, steel, amphora...)

You can bet on just one category or go all in. It’s about strategy, luck, and a bit of intuition.

💯 The Reveal

After everyone places their bets, I reveal the wine. We celebrate the wins, share our guesses, laugh at the wild ones, and double the chips for the right answers. Missed a detail? I take your chips — but don’t worry, there’s always another round to make it up!

🏅 The Winner Takes It All (Almost)

At the end, we count the chips. The player with the highest score wins a prize — but honestly, everyone walks away with something better: new knowledge, new favorite wines, and plenty of good memories.
